How Bee Rescue started – Our story briefly

By Matteo Michelizzi on March 9, 2021

Have you wondered how Bee Rescue began? To answer this question, we need to go a little backwards, precisely to July 23rd, 2020. On that day, I was reading an article about the different options that people can choose from to help local farmers in Italy. For instance, in Sicily you have the possibility to adopt a pistachio tree, in Apulia you can adopt an olive tree or even a cow. The idea is to adopt and get something in return. Among these options there was also the beehive adoption. As a honey lover and eager consumer, the first thing I thought was that I would love to adopt a hive, help a local beekeeper, and get to taste some delicious honey. But how could I do this alone?

In the following days I shared this idea with Cecilia who is a fellow student and has great knowledge of environmental consciousness. Cecilia loved the idea and decided to become the soon-to-be second Co-Founder. Later in September, we started to interview professional beekeepers to ask an opinion about our idea and collect useful data. The first beekeeper we interviewed was Nora a.k.a. our soon-to-be third Co-Founder and owner of Hello honey (check it out!).

Funny and long story short: before Nora joined, me and Cecilia spent months trying to find a professional beekeeper who would join us in this adventure. The reason behind this choice lied in the fact that having a local beekeeper in the team would have been critical in terms of connections and communication. As you probably realized by now, it turned out she was right in front of us all this time and we only needed to ask!

Our company was officially founded in January 2021. So here we are now, two hospitality business experts from Italy and a professional beekeeper from Loimaa, Finland. In other words, the Bee Rescue team!

Why should you join us as a beekeeper?

” Could you sell my honey too?”. Earlier I had no answer to this. My own honey brand Hello honey is very carefully built, and I didn’t know a way to promote honey produced by you and other beekeepers. Now I have the answer – here it is.

Why it is important to adopt a beehive

Since the very beginning of our journey we have one clear goal in mind: raising awareness about the environmental problem related to bee’s population decline. We strongly believe that people, as well as institutions and companies play a key role in solving this problem. Why? Because we all have some moral responsibility and it is …

However, this is the time of the year when it is easy to get sick, because of the continuous fluctuations in temperature.

Have you ever tried the old grandma honey trick? Honey is not actually a cure for cough or cold 🤧, but several research demonstrates that one spoon of honey before bedtime, alone or with lemon, brings relief as much if not more than cough medicines. Plus it is natural and delicious, so it can’t hurt to try! 😊

Some weeks back, we talked about some of our favou Some weeks back, we talked about some of our favourite cheese options to pair with honey for your cheeseboards.  Let's dive in deeper today with the various ways to enjoy honey! 🐝🍯🧀

1. Honey and yogurt:
Honey and yogurt provides many nutrients, vitamins, lactobacteria and omega-3 fats. Add honey to Greek yogurt and walnuts to gain a more nutritious snack!

2. Honey + porridge:
Porridge is an absolute must for breakfast in Finland and many other countries. Enjoy this classic breakfast with berries and a drizzle of honey for a strong start to your mornings!

3. Honey + hot beverages + smoothies:
Replacing sugar with honey for sweetening hot beverages is a classic. But remember, honey can be used to sweeten smoothies as well. Here is an idea: blend some yogurt with 1 avocado, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of grated ginger.

Honey is quite versatile and its purposes are endless. Let's remember the little guys that work so hard to make them. Help us give the bees a sustainable environment by adopting a hive today!

Buying common honey from the supermarket is easier and more tempting. However, local honey is a tastier and healthier choice.
👉 Local honey contains local pollen, which will strengthen your immune system.
👉 Finnish honey is also traceable. You can trust your local beekeeper about the way honey is harvested and processed 🍯❤️💛

Ottilia lives in a lovely home in Saarijärvi, and her family includes also sheep, chickens, and, of course, bees! 🐝🐓🐑

Her beehives are located just by a river, and the bees are free to visit the colorful flowers of the coastal meadow and from the nearby forest.

You can find these flavors in her delicious honey 😍If you adopt now, you will get the honey from the new harvest of summer 2022. However, we believe is worth waiting for it!

It is interesting to read that honey had been used It is interesting to read that honey had been used since ancient times, to heal wounds. Of course, modern wound-healing remedies were not an option 👩‍⚕️🍯

As a matter of fact, honey has antibacterial properties and a specific acidic pH level which boosts oxygen release (important in the healing process). Also, honey contains only a small amount of water, which is one of the conditions the bacteria need to grow and multiply.

👉 However, wounds are always different and it is good to treat them properly, as honey can not replace other modern wound healers. Lastly, the honey used by practitioners is medical-grade honey, which is sterilized and does not contain additives.

Worker honeybees are incredible hardworking creatures. In their short lifespan (40-60 days if born in summer) they complete many tasks, depending on their age.
👉 only in the last phase, they finally leave the hive to accomplish the job of foraging 🌷🐝
👉 a worker bee will produce in her life an average of 1/12 teaspoon of honey but for that, she will visit a huge amount of flowers 😮😮
Maybe next time we taste a spoon of honey we will remember to appreciate small accomplishments and the hard work we put into them 🥰
Have a nice weekend all 👋
